My Restomod 1996 GT Zaskar

DaveGeorge

Retro Newbie
I picked up an unloved 1996 Zaskar frame from eBay a few months ago and have built it up with modern kit. Obviously the purists aren't going to dig it as it's not bolt-for-bolt original spec but I'm glad to see a classic frame back in action and given some TLC. I've wanted a Zaskar for about 20 years so it's scratching an itch I've had for a long time. Let me know what you think!

Re:

nice mix of new and old there !

i think it would look nicer with a pair of chunky skin walls then once you sort the forks ...

Cheers. I've got some IRC Mythos tyres to go on it at some point, good colour side-walls and nice tread pattern. The semi slick Contis are for light duty on cycle tracks and fire road, etc. The bike is for the Mrs (at least that's how I sold her on having a third bike in the garage) so wanted something easy rolling so she doesn't have to work too hard to start with. Trying to get her hooked on the bike thing. The forks are set up with loads of sag so the geometry doesn't feel as crazy as it looks in the side pic. Knocking 30mm off the travel should tighten everything up a bit though.

Yes, the current fork length will want to rip the head tube out. Aside from that its another old bike brought up to date.

Re:

It's not ideal but I had the fork available to use so may as well. The headtube on the Zaskar is held on with some big welds and a large reinforcing gusset so I'm confident it'll hold up, certainly on a cycle track, at any rate.

I'm all for updating an old frame.

BETD do a proper rear disc mount for this frame. It is not always listed so you may need to ring and ask.

Can you reduce the travel on these forks - 80mm is about the max travel for these frames.

The rest is down to taste, pocket depth, availability etc.
