Mark from Ventus Custom Cycles ( http://www.ventuscustoms.com/Welcome.html ) found my Engraved Campagnolo parts via eBay and got in touch with me to see if I could engrave an entire groupset for him for his exclusive custom build for the NAHBS bike show. Too which I whole heartedly agreed!

His bike is stunning a very modern retro cross if ever I did see one, very inspiring. It's a titanium/ carbon audax style of build.

Nice bike but....

Why provide mudguard eyes on the dropouts and then use horrible mudguards like those? They look like what they are - tacky add-ons.
What is this obsession with "honey" brown leather?

Apart from that it looks fantastic.

Mark.

Without wanting to sound negative...

That thing is the fugliest mishmash of styles I've seen for a long while. It's gimmicky. Not only does it look a mess, but the position is all wrong for an audax bike. An in-line seatpost with a Brooks saddle puts the rider way too far forward with that seat tube angle.

Paul Sadoff's blog has a refreshing take on show-bikes:

Nice work on the engraving Tel, looks a good job.

Did you go to Bespoked Bristol? Same deal there, everything had brown brooks saddles and tape. Didn't see a single, for example, turbo.

Fair enough and I'm inclined to agree to a degree. There are aspects of the bike that I really like but the seat position really lets it down imho. Also agree with Mark about the guards, I do like the way they cut across the wheel slightly but I think some custom jobbies would have been much better. Made from titanium would have just been ace :)

Oh btw it's not a seatpost is the seat tube extending up and cut to size like some of the new carbon stuff.

Oh...well I thought it would be of interest seeing a modern retro build. Plus I consider the people on here to be my community so wanted to share my news....it seems to have sparked a bit of conversation but I apologise if.....

....actually I'm not sure what I am apologising for or whether one is even due :?

I guess I consider old steel bikes a little like old cars:
