Is it possible your axle is fitted the wrong way around?

You say it is longer on the non drive side? That is wrong, Drive side should have a longer taper or overhang on the axle length exiting the frame (just general b/b fact)

Sorry minor legend, I don't think I explained that
bit clearly, it is indeed longer on the drive side, by
a couple mm. On the development front, I
tried an old stx rc crank, and hey presto, 48mm chain line!
So looks like I need to source an stx rc crank,
although does anyone know if higher range
Shimano from the same range would do the trick?

Different names, XT, LX etc have had different profiles at different times

Measure your axle length as I gather you have

And look up in here, to see what will suit:

I know this has already been mentioned, but it's worth restating

Saying LX or XT or whatever cover continual evolution, for Shimano the FC-Mxxx numbers are specific to each though, use those to positively identify them
