my 1993 exage STI unit exploded, need advice

I just got a very nice 1993 M Trax unboxed, all in great condition except for the right STI unit, which exploded when I tried to do my first gear shift. Luckily this happened in the garage instead of outside, and I believe I have all the bits that fell out. Basically, the lower of the levers fell off the unit, and the upper lever remains attached.

Can these be put back together? If so, is there anything I need to know?

They can be reassembled if you have everything.

It'll be easier if you remove the shifter from the bike and work on it somewhere away from large immovable objects, underneath which are perfect for losing tiny bike parts.
 
Further to Pauls comments

Its a long held myth that fridge magnets are for decoration or for keeping young Henry's crayon drawing of his teacher, Miss Popplewell in pride of place - the whole base of the fridge is magnetic to all known small objects. They have their own gravitational pull for anything small and important.

Do not attempt to disassemble anything intricate near one of these objects. Only madness can be found on this path.
