My 1991 Gt Avalanche

Seen as it was a nice day, I went and took some photos of my Avalanche outdoors and in daylight.
After some work on the gears, mainly sticky shifters, I can now ride it and enjoy it. The tyres will at some point be swapped out for Ritchey MegaBites with amber walls when I can find a pair at a reasonable price, failing that, I could go with Panaracer Smoke and Dart as I really like how they roll on my '92 Bravado.
I really love those early 90's GT's especially with the rigid forks like those fitted here. The Bologna Cut is quite exquisite!

Also very lucky to get an Avalanche with an original GT Competition Saddle as they're very hard to find. Quite a comfy saddle too actually! 😁
At some point I may consider getting blue cables like the ones fitted to my Bravado as they look and perform quite nice.
I still have to pinch myself from time to time, can't quite believe I ended up with this lovely example of a 1991 GT Avalanche in a 16" frame, like all my other GT hard tails I have owned and currently still own.
Enjoy!

Looks fantastic 👍

That was quick!!!

It looks in fantastic shape and I always remember gawping at these in the GT ad in MBA.
There wasn't too much to do other than working the sticky shifters, but that should hopefully improve as I continue to ride it.
I did end up replacing the chain as that was a bit worn but cassette seems to work fine with it (so far).

The sticky shifter issue seems mostly resolved now, can shift through all gears without too much resistance.
Headset serviced, replaced bottom bearing cage with new loose bearings and plenty of grease. Also replaced the crown race with a spare from my 1991 Trek 950 as the original had some pitting and tight spots. Seems to work better now but may consider a replacement headset in the near future if any other problems arise.
Overall it is in very nice condition for it's age and I am happy to have bought it.
I am hoping to find some period correct tyres for this bike too, though finding amber walled Ritchey MegaBites will be a bigger challenge than finding the Panaracer Smoke/Dart tyres for my 1992 GT Bravado.

The Shimano Deore DX seatpost has had to make way for the original GT seatpost included in the sale as I found the DX seatpost to be a size too small to fit correctly. It's not advisable to keep using it as it could cause damage to the frame. So I'll be posting the Deore DX seatpost for sale soon. Its diameter is 26.8mm.

Just found some Ritchey Megabite tyres for my Avalanche, though I would have preferred amber/tan walled versions, I don't think black walled tyres look bad on my Avalanche...
Offer of £25 got accepted so they'll be making their way to me soon.

I think black walls work particularly well with that colour scheme.
Well it does currently have black Tioga's fitted, and they looks fine, but the Tioga's are not period correct for the bike. The 1991 GT Avalanche came fitted with amber wall Ritchey Megabites from factory (according to the 1991 catalogue). The Tioga's are decent tyres but a bit of a drag compared to the Panaracer Smoke/Dart combo on my Bravado.
