My 1986 Mercian Super Vigorelli

Domcat43

Retro Newbie
This is my 1986 Mercian Super Vigorelli single speed. Always wanted a Mercian as they are built in my home town, so a couple of years ago I bought this frame and forks with the crank and headset from ebay. Apparently it had been refurbished at Mercian before I bought it. I built it up over a year or so, it's a bit of a mish mash of parts but I like my bikes like that! :D

Parts...

57cm frame.
Cinelli Criterium bars.
Cinelli 110mm XA stem.
Modolo 'Flash' levers and calipers.
Miche Primato crank.
Miche Primato hubs.
BLB billet track pedals.
Wolber Alpine ceramic 27" rims.
Gatorskin tyres.
Brooks Swift saddle.

That is very nice indeed, and a beautiful colour. Love it!

Thanks! I was lucky when I bought it, as it's exactly my size, in a colour I liked, with a drilled rear bridge for a brake unlike 99.9% of track frames you ever see. I wanted to build another single speed (replacing a Jack Taylor that was stolen) rather than go the fixed gear route so needed the rear brake.

Beautiful !

Whats with the nutted brakes as late as 1986? I've only seen Atala's running nutted fitting brakes past 1984.

No idea! I bought some recessed fitting brakes before the frame arrived and was surprised to find the frame was drilled for nutted brakes. It then took ages to find some decent nutted calipers, I didn't want to use Weinmann's that are everywhere.

Maybe the original customer specified them for some unknown reason?

That looks really lovely.
Its a nice colour as mentioned. Its not a colour I would think I would like if I hadn't seen it and the black all round really sets it off. I have a King of Mercia frame and fork in my loft that I need to get refurbished but never get round to, maybe this will inspire me to get it done ;)
Hows the ride?

It rides great, although in all honesty since I finished it last October I've only been out on it a handful of times. Never seem to get chance!

And would love to see your King Of Mercia built when or if you do it! Can't beat a Mercian... ;-)
