I had a set of these BIT 
These look as if they have been cut (lower one) to go over the freewheel, you could only fit these by removing the freewheel so would guess they have been bodged :roll:

I agree. They would not have been split like that originally and came with little black plastic clips to hold them together.
They made a horrendous noise when fitted. I had some on my Explorer but cut them off they were so annoying.
Great bit of UK MTB history though.
