MTB to Commuter project

Hi Everyone

thinking about cobbling together a commuter bike for my daughter . A nice MTB frame that I could add mudguards and a front rack . Any suggestions ? I'd need sensible pothole proof wheels and low maintenance gears . Am I better off starting with a road tourer ? She needs upright riding position and flat bars so my first thought is MTB ....

Well if I’m honest, being a daily commuter for 30 min ride to work (and 25 back ) I miss 700c wheels 26” wheels do feel sluggish although if your little girl doesn’t know any different 26” would be great! Retro mtb Shimano XT m739 components is cheap enough paying about £20 a piece of your hunting down auctions etc.

Go with a steel frame with plenty of mounting points. The frame will last a long time and perhaps be grandchilds first real whip?

Whereabouts are you based I’m in Cardiff and have a cheap town bike GIANT CRS 3.0 it’s got generic Shimano but it’s 700c and pretty solid if you wanted to go that route

She's been leasing a VanMoof and she likes that geometry for cycling round London e.g. comfortable while standing at traffic lights & good bounce out of potholes . Solid frame, thick tyres made me think of MTB.
Is there a technical term for a frame in which the top tube is horizontal to the ground ?
Giant CRS is an interesting shout but she sees that shape as too "Dutch Ladies' bike" for her current urban lifestyle

Hehe! Not a clue, defiantly look at retro steel, probs better off the pair of you sitting down of a confined evening and flicking through eBay at 10 mile radius see what’s out there and put together a watch list, you can balance, convenience, looks and price off the back off that and might even find a steal of a bargain!
