For Sale Mountain Cycle MOHO STS

@coyut,
The risk of fitting an entire bike into such a small box is that the parts might rub/scrape together while shipping, which would likely cause damage. Preventing that scenario was what necessitated (in my mind, at least) a generous amount of packing materials.

I can't find it, but somewhere on here, years ago, I ranted about how I received 3 bikes in a row from 3 different sellers in 3 different parts of the country, and all 3 were packed by different bike shops who all swore up-and-down that they were experts and that they knew how to pack a bike...

...yet all 3 bikes arrived damaged, likely due the probability that the shop owner relegated packing duties to the "new hire" who had no experience packing a bike. Those particular bikes suffered more damage in a weekend riding in delivery vans than they did in 30 years of riding! If any of THOSE shops had packed your bike, they would have charged you between $50 and $100, and then effectively let a team of angry gorillas deliver it.

Those kinds of bike shops SAY they care about your bike, but it's obvious that they care EVEN MORE to sell you a NEW bike than ship your old bike, and that fact is evidenced in how well they pack your bike for shipping. Grr! :mad:

Who'd have thought I could stuff an entire bike into such a small box (38" x 26" x 9")?

Cheapest cost to ship from USA to Switzerland was to use USPS @ $230!!!! Before COVID, it cost about a third as much.

If it were even ONE inch larger in ANY dimension, USPS would NOT ship it.

Disassembly, cutting a box down to size (which involved a good bit of trial-&-error), and wrapping all parts (except the wheelset) in foam pipe lagging took the better part of a day and over 2 rolls of packing tape, but I was on a mission to see if could be done.

Admittedly, I may have gone overboard on the foam, but (1) I have plenty of packing materials as I save it all from deliveries that I receive, (2) foam pretty much guarantees that all parts will not bang or rub together while en route, and (3) foam helps to wedge everything together in the box which should minimize movement.

Hopefully coyut can take some pics when he receives it to see if our little 'experiment' worked!
