....later rediscovered by Manitou, as we see!! Anyone ever come across an uncracked one of these? I'd get one like a shot- classic early suspension idea.

also manufacturers who like to stamp their logo or serial number into components, campag cranks were another example in a lecture,

material section for a tube is pretty basic stuff,

Im selling a couple soon..

1 Manitou HT 18" with a tiny (and I mean tiny) crack in the headtube which has not got any worse since Ive riden it this last year or so

1 Manitou FS 16" with no cracks at all same model as on bay..

I wouldn't drill holes to stop it cracking I think you'd have to grind it out perhaps fill with weld and grind again so there are no nasty stress raisers. How the aluminium etc would deal with the heat and stuff I have no clue.

This is a little bit like work so I don't feel so guilty about posting!!!!

Had that done to my rts-1...seems ok now.

For additional strength and to try and prevent it happening in future I would shrink fit an aluminium ring around the outside. We used to do a similar stunt BITD on frames that had damage due to running tripple clamps. The simplest and easiest method was to put a jubilee clip round and tighten! Extended the life of a couple of frames we had. Just a more brutal version of the ring reinforcing that a couple of manufacturers advertised. Although make sure you do it with the top headset cup in place or fit the new headset cup before the ring has a chance to cool and contract.
