MOTOR CHAT

What is the plan for it Mark? Rallying, racing, hill climbing or just traffic light grand prix?

Seeing as it's a motor chat thread I suppose I can chat about my motors. Had a few classics over the years and a few bikes but mostly all gone now. Just the Montesa and the AJS left now.
And of course the van. :D

Na, it's racing days are over, will be used for shopping trips to ASDA, church on Sunday, nipping to B&Q for a packet of screws etc :), may be seen with a bike rack on the back (seriously)

Always loved bonkers cars like Groub B rally cars, Metro 6R4's, Peugeot 205T16's etc (incedentally Ken Hall the builder of this Escort now runs a Metro 6R4), suppose this is the closest i can get to one of those.

In the late 80's early 90's i tried building a 60's ex race Mini to use on the road, ex Hillclimb/Sprint/Special saloon car, was semi space framed and very light, tragically it got scrapped (mega pressure from the parents who's garage it was in), never really got over that

That lead me to getting this Escort and has made me more determined to get finished and on the road whatever it takes.

Very nice job on the Van BTW ;)

A bit more progress, lots more problems :)

Got the sump chopped to fit the front crossmember, still needs a bit more chopped off to clear the steering rack (which bolts onto the crossmember), will also need to alter the oil pick up pipe inside the sump as this was sitting down in the bit i've chopped out.

This is another problem, ain't got a hope in hell of getting an exhaust manifold past this lot, in it's previous life the car ran it's Rover V8 dry sumped and chassis mounted, recon this would have provided space for the exhaust manifolds (probably block huggers), i'm running the motor with a conventional sump and crossmember mounted.

Couple of options though, i could run the R/H manifold backwards, downpipe crossing the front of the engine round to the other side.

Or i could fabricate custom manifolds that go up and down into the huge voids either side of the gearbox, never made exhaust manifolds before but it sounds like it'd be fun.

Got the gearstick shortened and angled back a bit, temporeraly mounted the steering wheel and handbrake to make sure it'd clear these, will be changing the ugly Sherpa van gearnob.

Wont be the most comfortable car but it does'nt need to be.
