ma maws got a Kwak :?

I think it is you..BTW is that MrP's helmet oan the back seat :p

Yeah Im using the spare Bandit motor, the Harley engines Ive turned into a shrine with candles round them in the bedroom that way Im sure on making the ground move when Im entertaining a lady

That frame I showed earlier is a really good price IMHO as for the Harley engines the wee one is a 1550 TC and the biggest one is 19## TC or summit a canny mind. So I need a real 'show boat' frame for it and as Im sure you'll know the minute you mention HD you get the arse ripped out yer wallet :x

I really must get round to swapping frames on me Bonnie

Have a spare one in the cellar - just canny make the time tae dae it

So, not reported on the Escort for a while, slowly making progress :)

Had the shell rolling last year, this was really just to make sure the suspension bits fitted and worked (most needed modified in some way), once i had this sorted i stripped the car back down to a shell, this was done to clean the old crappy paint off the underside and to fully weld in the rear Watts linkage towers.

As it sits at the moment.

SAM_0421.jpg

Watts towers welded in, looked at a few examples on the net, bracing the long tower seemed common so i did this, short tower does'nt need this as it's subjected to less leverage.

This job has been a low point, i like welding but welding under a car in a half sitting half crouched position with the torch six inches from your face is never fun.

Got all the suspension bits sorted out (in the house of course) and ready to go back on the shell once the painting is done, it's actually all simple stuff, i could get the shell rolling again in a morning or afternoon. (rear axle is covered in the garage)

Gearbox i'm using is an LT77 to go with the Rover V8, the gearbox mounting crossmember needed modifying to fit the Escort floor, ends of crossmember were angled, Escort floor is flat also the crossmember was far too narrow.

Started by cutting the ends and bending it straight.

SAM_0440.jpg

Welded two bits of 3mm plate on the ends to widen it, strengthened with box section.

SAM_0441.jpg

Welded on two more plates to tie the first ones to the original crossmember, strengthened with gussets/in fills.

SAM_0442.jpg

End result sure ain't pretty but its bomber strong.

SAM_0443.jpg

Made these captive bolt plates to drop through from the inside down into the crossmember.

SAM_0444.jpg

Trial fitted.

Getting this done let me perform the significant stage of starting to get the engine mounted in the shell, to establish where the engine needs to be (fore and aft) i had to get the gearbox mounted (gearbox can only go in one position determined by the stick going through the hole in the floor)

Got this done thismorning, surprising how far forward the engine seems (note the gearbox and bellhousing visable), but then the bulkhead is cut back a fair bit, at least this makes it easy to work on.

SAM_0446.jpg

Stick in the centre of the hole in the tunnel (gearstick will be shortened and possibly angled backwards)

SAM_0447.jpg

Next job is to modify the sump to clear the front crossmember, once this is done i can start fabricating the engine mounts

If i can get the shell all painted underneath, rolling and with the engine and gearbox bolted in place for the end of this year i'll be happy :)

i have to say i'm loving your work there mark
whats the timescale on this ?

give me a shout if you need any machining done

get on with it then :D

Wish I had a fraction of your ability Mark - I love these posts. This'd make a great a series in one of those Fast Ford type magazines, maybe even pay you for it to?

Cheers guy's ;) , i'll try and keep you'se updated more often.

Not sure about timescale Mike, been at it on and off for two and a half years now, going to be rebuilding the engine next year so maybe running and driving 2014, maybe ?, getting the motor built and fired up will be the biggest MOJO boost, recon it'll be full steam ahead after that stage.

Cheers for the offer on the machining work, may take you up on that.

Cheers Aaron, i've been messing with cars pretty much constantly for 20 odd years though so just learned as i've went along (and made lots of mistakes), i find i'm ok when i'm immersed in a huge project like the Escort but no use with tiny simple jobs, took me ages to get around to fixing the windscreen washer jets on the Beemer

Never even thought about a Magazine feature, though maybe there'd be pressure to get stuff done to it then ?, but then maybe that'd be a good thing.
