MOTOR CHAT

Now that the DH8 is built and gathering dust i got some more progress done on the Gartrac rally slag :)

Finaly started getting the rear axle mounted, this was a relief as it confirms that the brackets have been welded in the right place, these cost £215 to get done so if they had been in the wrong place i'd have been mightily pissed off :x , but they are fine :) , the four bars clear the box's.

Next job is to cut the Panhard rod tower off (on the left) and weld in the two Watts linkage towers (one seen laying on the floor), also need rear shocks, going to convert a pair of standard shocks to coilovers as i dont fancy shelling out £300 for a pair of group four Bilsteins.

Also found this interior shot of a G3 hillclimb car for sale. (notice it's got a Corsa power steering column which i'm considering)

Inspired by this i immediately ran out and chopped the standard RS Turbo dash to bits :D

originaly intended to make the car a bit civilised, full dash, proper door cards, heater, stereo, maybe a bit of carpet, not now , it'll be basic and pretty raw, all wiring etc will be on display (will be neat though)

Jimi you do know that there are places that sell cars that are complete, you don't need to go to all that bother- I go to Arnold Clark ;)

Yeah but going to Arnold Clark isnt as much fun Gazz!

Looks like a nice job on the axle Jimi. Not tempted to graft in a Subaru rear end though? Bargain cheap independent rear conversion for the brave- you would have got a complete rear end for what you paid for the axle mods.

I've been toying with the idea of selling the yellow van this weekend and getting something more comfy. That said, by the time I get my ass into gear, the spring will be here and I will have the Jensen back up and running. I'm sure I can fit a bike in the boot so I guess I don't need new transport for now.

Markie life would be boring if theres wasn't folks like you aboot! :D Si why not work some magic on the Van?

Yes it's taxed at last! Full years worth ;)

Van has had a hard life and is getting tired. I did toy with the idea of turning it into a camper but with the Jensen and GT40 about to start swallowing serious amounts of money I guess it won't happen.

 , too easy, besides i could'nt live with a modern blob with wheels, though the money i've spent on old cars over the years i could easily have bought a new one, maybe with wheels and an engine at least

Cant wait to see pics of the GT40 when you get it Si :) , pleased you're keeping the Interceptor too

Some more slow progress on the Escort :)

Got this rear coil over conversion kit from Rally Design

Used this with a pair of gas Monroes and a pair of 14" 120lb springs to make these

coilovers.jpg

Major problem when i came to fit them, found the turret boxes in the shell were far too small, i recon the car has never had coilovers fitted despite having the boxes for the four bars, it must have ran with slipper springs/single leafs, standard turreted shocks and a panhard rod.

Drastic action needed so cut the tops of the turrets to create space for new mounts, will also section the inner wings either side of the turret box's, spread them out and re-weld them to make space for the springs, going to install a rear cross member made from 3x2" box section steel to mount the coilovers to.

Not happy with the shocker mounts on the axle, these are the ones i got the rally place to weld on along with the diamond brackets (ripped off TBH), any group four Atlas axle i've looked at the brackets are facing the other way (the way i'm holding the one in the pic), also these brackets can only take a 13mm bolt (would need drilled out for anything bigger), when has a shocker ever been mounted with a 13mm bolt :?, got new mounts from rally design (came as in the pic with a 17mm bolt), going to tack them on with my welder then get them welded properly later (my welder is only a 150 amp, not meaty enough for welding an axle)

How the axle is at the moment, has alloy Watts linkage diff cover fitted, using MK3 Escort front discs on the rear, still to get the caliper mounting brackets welded to the axle, not happy with the rubber bushes in the four link bars so will change these for Polly ones, i have the Watts linkage towers to weld in but need to get the rear shocks mounted and the car roughly at ride height to get them in the right place.

Because the car has no underfloor tank or spare wheel well the axle will be mostly visable from the rear which is cool

Found this for sale on Pistonheads, mostly the same spec as mine.
