The 1994 Titanium FRS wasn't far short of that either.

Remember that these are factory spec'd bikes. I remember seeing full on Merlins with every CNC'd madness you can imagine and they cost more than cars as the frame was £2200 to begin with.

My Indian Fire Trail costed me around 1.000 euros in 1993, it'a close to 3.000 now. And the companies are supposed to have maximized resources since. The money is going into someone's pocket anyway...
As for the Merlin, yep, I remember it as the most expensive thing around, apart all those crazy one-offs...

Trek 9500 from 1992 with full XTR was just shy of 2.5K at the time. Expensive mass market bike and apart from pogo elastomer shock not hugely low tech compared to modern single pivot designs.
