More retro in this months MBUK

Four whole pages about the history of XC. A few nice photos of Ritchey, Tomac and Gould etc.
The text has quite a few errors in it and there's an inset box entitled 'Abysmal efforts'....
The tone in general seems to be about how crap the bikes we used to put up with were, and predictably finishes with the hard sell on carbon, suspension and hydro-forming.

I wouldn't bother buying a copy; it'll only take two minutes to read it in the newsagents.

That magazine has been on a downward spiral for so long - it was always the less serious publication, MBi being a more useful source of reviews, route maps, mechanical tips, etc. Nowadays MBUK seems to market itself to the under 20s with poorly written, spellcheck-phobic slang-filled reviews and pointless politically incorrect 'humourous' articles - their attitude to women is straight out of a Carry-on movie and is wholly inappropriate when dealing with a sport that is enjoyed by similar numbers of males and females.

I sometimes get friends and relatives to bring me a copy from the UK and after a brief flick though I always wonder why I bothered.............i suppose there's still Mint Sauce.

Rant over.

Will have to check one out in smiths. To be fair think a few from MBUK 'get' the whole retro thing, they have done a couple of decent retro inspired features in the past. Shame if they've gone the other way!

Haven't read it since the early 2000s , the mrs bought an issue a year or 2 ago and as I was putting it in the bin flicked through the pages , I wasn't missing much .

Print media is dying on it's arse . Who wants to wait a month for something that is just a massively edited opinion about something we can all find on the interweb anyway .

Online content has been the way forward for a long time .

I disagree , I always enjoy reading a magazine with good articles and nice pictures . No need for the News bit though .

but compared to continental magazines Uk ones seem to be filled with adverts , not very pleasant to read .

Always has been it's core market though, even BiTD, they need to make money, need to get adverts. If the adverts where from second hand merchants the story would be different.
A magazine has to write what you want to here, teenagers (as we were BiTD*) tend not to care about old crap unless it's to know what they have now is better. They also need to know what's good and be told that so their friends know that what they just bought from the advertiser is cool.

No change from back in the day, just the audience 'style/way of life' has changed.

It's only a crap magazine now as most here are beyond that sort of thing and have Internet places that tell us the old stuff is cool and which specifically, so our now older/virtual mates know what we have is cool... ... oh crap... :?

*most of us, that is ;)

Apologies for the selective snipping in quoting your post. I think you're right in what you say. I've read a lot of mountain bike mags and media around other areas of interest to me (music festivals and gigs mainly - outside of bikes). While I write gig and festival reviews for web sites, this site is high on my list of daily visits but I still love the way that periodicals like 'The Ride' are putting together. Yes you can download it but it reads like a glossy mag. It's content seems pretty independent, and it has a surreal beautiful feel to some of the photography and articles. It's not all about advertising and turnover. I've read the paper based version and perhaps I'm wrong. I'm the kind of dinosaur who'd rather own a CD that I can take home rather than a 'virtual' MP3.

I hope you look on this as a recommendation rather than a criticism. I don't write for any MTB magazines, I'm purely a junkie consumer.
:D

Completely agree with Fluffychicken, MBUK same mag as BITD aimed at same audience. we're just not that audience anymore.
The only thing I cherish is Mint Sauce for which I will always be grateful.
