After taking the Saracen for a blast, I am pretty happy with the brakes compared to the bike it replaced (which had hydraulic disks)

But they sound like a seal when they are applied, they scared birds for miles :p

I have cleaned the rims too,

Looking for some new pads, cant stretch to Swissstops for my hack bike.

Any recommendations for modest priced, quiet but good cantilever pads

Koolstop eagle 2's any good

Re:

Most kool stops, red, blue, black.

aztec are pretty good. I've also used 'baradine' you may have seen them on ebay, not the last word on braking power, but quiet.

And, yes, eagle 2's are good.

Thanks, I went out today for the first time in 15 years on a bike with cantilevers and the noise was deafening

The eagle 2's are the favourites so far.

I have cleaned the rims, given them a slight wire wool (right thing to do ???)

some new pads should help

Re:

Indeed, some pads need that glass finish knocking off, to get the friction going. Especially shimano 'wet and dry' pads, bloody rubbish. Three times over with a hard file/sand paper will do no harm ;)

Sound advice :p

None of the above will cure an incorrectly toe'ed pad though, it's generally poor setup that causes the howl.

Re:

I may have some new canti pads I can let you have, though I may have already been too generous and given them away, need to check bits box tomorrow

If I've still got them think they were Aztec ones.

Incorrectly toe'ed ?

I am not sure if my brakes allow for toeing adjustment :?

Toeing so that one end of the pads hit first to reduce squeal ?

Re:

It's toe-in / toe in not toeing. I.e.. The toe of the brake (with comparison to yer feet, the front) hits first.

I like the v-brake style pads, can be had cheaply with Fibrax, Clarks, discobrakes. You can get post type as well.

(Yes I know toeing is what you doing when you perform the act)

Re:

Offset pads, like shimano xtr style reduce the need for large toe in, v-brake loads are the same offset stud style.
If you're not getting new ones then file the loads flat and clean them up.
Clean your rims, baby wipes do a good initial job. File any notches out and use a rough emery paper to roughen the rim again. Newer rims now come rough. Anodised rims just takes time to wear through it M231CD for example.

Him... Thus link seems to have some simple advice http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/w ... ing-22677/
