miche performance 57mm calipers with 45mm guards - possible?

So I went to the LBS this afternoon, all ready to order some guards for the wife's bike after checking tyres in the frame for clearance, and then remembered that the bike uses standard road brakes, so there's no way I'd be able to fit the 42mm wide guards I was thinking of using. And I want to use the widest tyres possible, either a 32 or 35mm, so can't use a thinner guard.

Does anyone know of a decent caliper brake, either single or dual pivot, in silver/chrome finish, that will take a wide guard? Could be either short or long drop (Short drop will work, with the pads as far down as they'll go)

Short drop campag brakes will reach the rims with the pads at the lowest position, so 50mm.

I've had these problems in the past and solved in two ways:
1 Trim the guard slightly around the brake
2 Fir 32mm guards, you can get away with most 32mm tyres and still have the guard functional.

Those are the two solutions that I'm thinking of... I will build the bike without guards, then see which ones would work best and modify them to suit. Anyone have any pics of guards that have been cut away to allow the brakes to work without catching?

OK, so I have finally started building my wife's razesa, and have the frame, forks, wheels, bars and saddle all together, so it looks something like a bike at long last!

I wanted to get the wheels and brakes fitted to the frame to check clearances for the mudguards. The front wheel has plenty of clearance under the fork crown for a guard, and the brake might be OK too (it might "squash" the guard though when braking)

The rear wheel however has barely 1cm of clearance between the tyre and downtube and brake bridge. I don't think the record brake caliper will work on the rear, at least not with a mudguard.

I will almost certainly need to get some new calipers, long drop (47-57mm), hopefully with more clearance than the record dual pivots I have now, so I don't think they will be a problem.

But can anyone help me out with the mudguards? The tyres are 700 x 32 continentals, which actually measure 27mm across when fully inflated. My LBS can get stronglight mudguards, which I think look nicer than the SKS ones, and are actually a bit cheaper too. I'm looking at the 35mm version http://www.stronglight.com/stronglight/ ... uit?id=385

Can anyone tell me if the 1cm of clearance I have will be enough to squeeze them in between frame and tyre?

What sort of clearances are needed when installing mudguards? (It might sound like a daft question to everyone in the UK, but I'm Spain where it hardly ever rains, and I can't even remember the last time I actually cycled in the rain :LOL: )

The stronglight guard are nice but the fixings are useless. I use the stronglight guard and SKS fixing for the stays to stop them moving.

I find with long drop brake the largest tyre I fit with guards is 25mm and still have enough clearance for it not to rub. 28mm are a push. If you used a tyre without such a high aspect ratio (all contis are tall) you will have better luck.

I am using Tektro R539 dual pivot side pulls with V.O. ( Velo Orange ) 45mm fenders and 35mm Soma 700C tires on a Raleigh ( '84 Gran Tour ) and they have a good amount of vertical adjustment for the pads. They also come with nutted mounting for older bikes, which is nice as the selection is not great for newer brakes for non recessed frames. I believe V.O. make a narrower fender as well, and have smooth as well as hammered versions and they come with everything you need to mount them ( pre drilled ) including the leather washers. Thanks for the help! I already have the tyres, so will have to use those for now. What is so different about the stronglight and ska mountings? They look the same in the pictures. My lbs can get both, but the stronglights look nicer.

Any opinions on the Miche 57mm brakes? They seem to get good reviews and are a lot less than the tektros.

And what a lovely Raleigh :)
