1987 Muddy Fox Explorer - Resto/build

Link now correct, somehow posted the wrong one last night!

Cheers
very interested in the wheel refurb - I am going to tackle the axles and hopefully replace with something shinier and possibly hollow with skewer for both strength and convenience, I just haven't done that before so dont know what to expect ;-)

some progress today - collected frame from Cyclone and set about new headset and BB...

one of the canti posts is out of alignment so will tackle that as I fit the renovated dia compe originals

as ever, Cyclone have dipped frame, sand blasted and then powder coated, baked. gloss finished and baked again

the dip has got rid of all the accumulated gronk and oxidation inside the frame - which is important if this is going to last another 37 years

this is what the titanium sparkle colour looks like 'naked' its a bit bling but will be drowned out by all the shiny bits when I fit those...

will have to swap out this BB as at 115mm ( the exact same length as the axle I took out of the BB when I stripped it) there is precious little clearance between smallest chainring and stay - the headset with 37 mm stack is a perfect fit however so pleased about that.

rolling chassis to check the original wheels fit aok - as I replaced the axles with hollow/QR alternatives - retainiing the original cones from the sanshin solid axles - guessed the position of the spacers etc on the rear the front axle is slightly shorter than the original but no more than a few mm. everything tightens nicely. There is such a huge gap between rear tyre and seat tube its comical when compared to modern bikes the BB is very high up too - Klunker style :)

Decals will be along time coming, along with some choice upgrades I have ordered - so for now will build up with bits and bobs I have in my spares bin - next up is swap BB for a 122mm one and try to match the frame colour at same time

Releasing the screw on freewheel was a bit of a battle, using 2 toothed suntour freewheel removal tool, this just kept slipping, with a puff of smoke and a lot of heat, instead of turning the freewheel. Eventually with the tool held tight with a large nut on the axle and a huge wrench it did release, was worried I might shear something but there is no damage. The original freewheel was very worn and had teeth missing from the sprockets. Cleaning and polishing the hub is so much easier with that out of the way and the 'dork disc' removed ! Now looking shiny and with new 6 speed sunrace screw on. 1000020012.jpg

Built up as far as I am able to progress this weekend, while I wait for parts and decals.
So far this has been relatively problem free and pleased enough with the result, though there is much I would change I am going to wait to fit proper cables and a nice saddle etc.

Here pictured alongside my 1984 Overburys for comparitive purposes, the stance is similar for both.

Weather is diabolical this weekend thanks to storm Ernie, so relegated to working in the cellar and no chance of a shakedown ride.

Current plan is to end up with something that resembles 1985 spec from these artefacts from the retrobike archives. I was aiming for 'Monarch' spec but that had mostly XT deerhead and so isn't viable. I am going to end up with a very close match to the Pathfinder of 1985 with Nitto B902 and suntour LD2800, however the large flange sanshin hubs will be the most obvious anomaly. Finding a decent condition original saddle is nearly impossible so will have to be a repro model representative of the era. The quest for period NOS brake cable outers is also proving tough. I don't think I am going to find any good condition brake levers or pedals either so will have to improvise.
