All Campag 8 speed stuff is interchangeable.
You won't get a smaller chainring onto the crank spider - 39T is the smallest it will got to (otherwise the bolts would be outside the teeth
)
You can get a triple converter from Spacycles (TA ring) - this is a 39T ring with extra holes which allows you to hang a 3rd inner chainring off it. Otherwise you are stuck with buying a new later compact crank. Don't even think about buying the MTB cranks - they go for daft money these days!
39/26 isn't too bad a gear for most hills, provided you are reasonably fit.
