Mech Pimping For Cheapskates

Re:

I take your point, Ian, but I'm sort of resisting the urge to trip out on potential derailleur-cage designs, which I easily could!

Re:

Well- I cannot judge components unless I am intimate with them, which is not the case with the Mavic mech, so FWIW:

On the aesthetic level, I could live with the rest of the Mavic mech, but personally, that pulley-cage sets my teeth on edge. On the plus-side, I guess it is easier to hold in a vice, but then so is a ball-bearing, if you grind two opposing flats off it.

If the Mavic stuff- especially the derailleur- with it's 'all function, no frills' vibe, had come with a retail price that led you to believe that the vibe was anything but pretension and hype, then fair enough, but IIRC it didn't. The Mavic pulley-cage has the appearance of doing away with unnecessary production-steps, but did Mavic kindly pass on to the consumer the savings from production-efficiency implied by the shape of the cage? I don't think so.

Credit to someone for putting together a 'groupset' basically comprised of those derailleurs, SR Royal chainset, and Modolo brakes- good stuff- If you can then get people to pay a mark-up of 50% or more, basically for having your trademark engraved on everything... why not?

Couldn't resist this idea especially in this thread...

Maybe I should have mentioned this earlier? Or not...

Re:

Ha.
Once you have a research-&-development department, they have to justify their existence somehow- My imagination is struggling to hit upon the drivetrain-related 'problem' to which that pulley-cage was intended to be the elegant 'solution'? But then I guess the same could be said of my efforts... :)

Re:

I counter-bored the threaded hole in the outer cage-plate, using another improvised tool- a bit of a dog's dinner- I wouldn't exactly call the result 'engineering'. Must try harder next time!
And I started breaking down the angles on the plate with files:

Drilled out the holes for the pulley-bolts to their correct size:

More refining of curves:

Hi just a quick message to tell you I'm very impressed with your hand skills, and patience.

Looking forward to seeing the finished result.

Good for you !

Re:

I'm particularly impressed with the old school approach to tools - I was just saying the other day that I can't remember seeing anyone use a brace and bit or hand drill in the past decade or maybe two!

A pillar drill is very convenient for this kind of work but it's nice to be reminded that it's not essential...
