Measuring for Mechs

Bought some sexy vernier calipers to measure various bits of bicycle tubing and am now unsure about how I find the measurement for a front mech - is it the internal (post) size or the external tube diameter?

Surely it must be external? Internal wouldn't take wall thickness into account... :?

External - but be sure to measure in the mech mounting area.

if you have a mech on it, the older ones have the measurment (28.6 31.8 34.9) on the inside of the clamp. The later ones have them (if I'm not mistaken on the outside.

or just measure the outer diameter and see if it is a measurement you would recognise (i.e one of the standard sizes)

remember that size may vary .1-.2 or so.

The measurement for the FSR Front Mech is 32.2 - does that sound right?
