You've stirred my inner pedant: 517 & 717 look very similar from the outside, but the internal structure is very different and I don't think 517 are the harder 'Maxtal' alloy. Basically 717 are significantly better but still look totally right on a late nineties retro, absolute winner

Thanks for the info, I didn't realise that (obviously!). I just remember one day the LBS had 717's instead of 517's and thought they had been renamed.

To correct myself slightly, I think 517 are also Maxtal, 717 are still the business though in my humble...
