You'll want to start on the 400... then get some 800, and at least 1200 before you painting
i reckon 120 to get rid of the deeper scratches and then 400. I got some 1200-2000 finishing paper as well somewhere

Sean :)

Re:

You'll need something in-between 400 and 1200... It'll take forever and a day to get the 400 scratches out with 1200

I know its tricky because of the shapes and curves, but try each next finer grade perpendicular to the last... it'll help show when you've got the scratches out

Re:

i made a start last night, i needed 40grit and 120 in the end because the deeper scratches were difficult to remove.

like i said, its a start :D

Re:

blimey.. id have taken the fork to pieces and done each top section separately with the seals out..

one false move with the sand paper on the stanchions.. and..

will you be removing the seals to paint?

i'd be worried about the paint sticking to the seals even if masked well.. then when the seals do need removing when they get worn they'd crack the paint as they came out and potentially make a right mess..

Re:

I dont have the time to strip them down fully at the moment unfortunately. Luckily Im not incompitant enough to scratch the sanctions with the sandpaper while working lower down the legs ;) , i just took the crown off so i can work on the legs individually and the seals were taped up. But they will be coming out for the repaint and probably before more sanding takes place. For the minute Im Trying not to make more work for myself than whats necessary because i know i'll never get them finished otherwise!

Cheers :)

Re:

It's as simple as taking the two bolt at the bottom off. And pulling the legs out. A rag to catch a few mm of oil. Well worth doing and takes two secs. Stick a rag in the leg hole to bung it up.

Im guessing they would just pop out easilly using a flat head screw driver? As you can tell im a bit Inexperienced when it comes to working on fork internals, the only forks ive worked on have been elastomer

Re:

Well these legs separate easily, everything happens in the stanchion wrt damping, so you'll not see that side of things.
You can then wrap the stanchions up and place somewhere safe

The seals will lever out, I posted a link to enduroseals, it shows you a nice way to take the seal out and not damage them. But a screwdriver, tape on it to protect the seals they pop out easily*

The oil seals do not need to come out.

*easily - as in one of them poos that takes all your strength to get out and then you can't quite walk right or sit down normally afterwards ;-)
Yep they can be a bugger to get out if they've been in there a while.
