Marine Eldridge Grade -93 Headset

Hello!

I will today mount off the headset in order to repaint the bike.

The headset that is now on is the original Ritchey Logic CS 1-1/8".

I think that I will have to buy a new one because this one is rusty as hell in the bottom part.

Does anyone know which type of headset I can use?
I know I should have a threaded headset, but what about the stack height?
Or does anyone have something similar at home that you want to sell?

The best thing is to clean up your existing one and replace the bearing balls and cages and repack with grease. It should cost you about £5!

I might have a Logic in the garage, less the top nut. PM if interested.

I was going to ask a similar question. My 1991 Marin Pine Mountain has been cleaned up and put back together (with a few new parts where necessary). Rides great ... except that the steering is quite badly indexed - really wants to point straight ahead which is a trifle disconcerting when cornering. :?

The Marin brochure for 1991 says the headset is a Shimano Deore DX 1 1/8" OVERSIZE. Will any 1 1/8" threaded headset fit? Any recommendations for a decent but cheap one? (And where to buy?)

Yes, but you need to be careful of the stack height. The more modern cartridge headsets won't fit as they're too tall (unless you have a lot of spacers on the steerer tube).

IIrc the stack height for the DX headset was about 33mm. The newer STX cartridge ones are closer to 37mm.

As far as getting hold of one the best bet is probably Ebay. Just make sure that the stack height is OK.

Don't bother with the cages, just fit the balls in loose. You'll get more in and it'll make the headset run a little smoother. Bearings in cages are made for ease of assembly in the factory (to save time) and don't really have any performance benefits.

Thanks for the eBay tip! I asked in a few bike shops and they all shook their heads about my chances of getting a headset which would fit. One shop actually suggested I buy a new fork, aheadset and stem - I can't see that being less than £100 - and this is supposed to be more of a hack bike than a mint condition restoration (at least at the moment).

So I looked on eBay.com - quite a few NOS Shimano Deore DX headsets for sale which are the exact match for the old one. I've bought one for $45 including shipping. That should keep the bike going for another 20 years.
