I've built my 95 parkpre with rs rebas shortened to 80mm travel, xt 1x10, hydro disc front and hs33 rear. All the good handling of a mid 90s bike, with modern(ish) gears and brakes. I think it's turned out quite well... There's a thread somewhere. If you want a modern handling bike, then your only option is a modern bike. Old frames might handle ok with longer forks, or they might handle terribly, what they won't do is handle like modern frames. Disclaimer: the most modern MTB I've ridden is my 95 parkpre
