Marin Bolinas Ridge (not Palisades Trail first thought)

Devout Dirtbag
Hi,

Last weekend I bought what I think is an early 90's Marin Palisades Trail from a 'garage sale' I happened to pass by.

The bike has no decals on it, but is finished in flat grey with green/yellow forks and stem. The groupset is all 100GS (Biopace rings), 200CX canti-brakes (with koolstop blocks). It has a Marin saddle and Marin Lite seat post QR. The cranks are also a grey powder-coated finish?

The frame serial is MB2BS0035 - which doesn't tie in with any serial decoders I've seen on this forum :(

The bars and wheels have been replaced - Bikehut risers, front rim is an Araya 700c and the rear is a Rigida. Also the pedals are CT-Lite's (quite nice).

I was planning on replacing the rims/bars/stem/saddle - possibly the front forks and converting to a single-speed for razzing up/down the local dual carriageway loop near to me.

Can anybody shed any light on the serial number, and also suggest replacements (bars/stem/forks etc). Or should I pass it on (for some beer tokens) and buy myself a Langster?

I can post a pic up if it helps, but it effectively looks like this (minus decals, but with more of a yellow fork/stem):

Thank you,

Yep! Definitely looks more like the Bolinas Ridge than the Palisades (color of the the cranks & forks).

Was thinking of fitting some profile airwing bars - which I presume it would be better to fit a different stem (one with less of an angle). Any ideas?

Thanks.

Heh,

This takes me back, I used to hang around in my LBS dreaming about owning a Marin or a Scott.

Loved the finish on the Marins and the bonkers colour schemes.

Didn't love the prices though...

also, the bolinas was the only(ok, prove me wrong ;)) mtb in the range with horizontal rear wheel dropouts, my '92 bolinas ridge did. once pulled wheel out on a climb, ask paininthe on here.

one way to be sure ;)

Well, here's the actual bike - in all Saturday morning sunshine :)

Regarding the rear dropouts (pic below). Are these the 'versions' you referred to - as a guy I was chatting to said I wouldn't be able to convert this to a fixie - depending upon the rear dropouts.

looking like a bolinas then.

i cant see many people down grading- components :)

frame-wise though, no real difference throughout the range upto upper middle level. may be tange of some type.

that stem looks ok to me. usually the 'ridge came with a commuter/leisure type of stem with horrible rise.

for me, have a look at the seatpost size. it was often a wierd 26.5

cheers.

Hi,

Complete change of plans (I'm going for an all-out road-bike) so this is now for sale.

Will add a thread in the FS section.

Thanks,

Mike
