Marin bear valley alp - 2003 - headset issue

I’ve got an old 2003 Marin bear valley alp mountain bike and I need a new headset

I’m really struggling to know which one to get after two attempts and I’ve got the wrong one

I ordered a 1 1/8 headset but the cups don’t fit the frame so i order a 1 inch head set and it’s to small

What am I missing ?

On the web it says a 1 1/8th threadless head set

I guess I need to measure the internal of the frame to get the right diameter?

So you've taken the old one out? Do you have calipers to measure?
They are a press fit into headtube....IE....tight.

I have since posting and measured and it seems to be 34mm

The first one was 44 or something like that so I’ve gone third time lucky :S
