Mail order powder coating?

Sounds daft, I know!

For the first time in years I have got a bike worth spending some time and money on so I thought I should do it right.

I've read so many stories about how aluminium frames can and can't be powder coated and annoyingly I can't find anyone locally to give me a definitive answer.

So I wondered about any firms that might exist that offer a mail order service? Someone that is trust worthy and won't fudge up the job.

I can't afford a pukka paint job and I'd never do a decent rattle can job so I think powder coating is the best compromise.

Aluminium can be powdercoated.

Providing it's all alu and welded as such. not bonded tubes etc..

I had my Cannondale powder coated locally to me, by a place with an excellent reputation.

I'm pretty sure Triple S do a postal service. they're not the cheapest, but their work is excellent in my experience.

Postage both ways is likely to add way more than £20 to the cost, and there's the risk of damage in transit. Why not state your location and ask on the forum for local recommendations.

There are bound to be some powdercoaters near you. For example there are at least three that I know of within half an hour's drive from me in Cardiff and if you're near a city the same will apply to you.

There will be no problem with a welded alloy frame.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

I'm in Portsmouth. There are a fair few coaters in the area but so far I've only found that they are more set up to powder coat gates etc.

I'll try SSS too, I'm going to strip the paint myself as the history of the frame is unknown, I'll see if they have a problem with this.

I've just had a Marin Quake 9.0 done by a company in Southampton. Excellent service, excellent job. No postage, I took it in myself, picked my colour, picked it up within a week. Any colours 'non-mainstream' may require a special order which no doubt will bump the price and timeline.

Mail order is a hassle for all parties, wrap, post, unwrap, [work], wrap, post, unwrap - go local if you want low cost, less hassle.

Don't be put off my commercial powder coaters doing gates, my bike is now the same colour as safety fence!

Theres always someone local, you just need to ring them - You'll work out pretty quickly if they're worth doing business with. Good luck and if you can put up with the trip to Southampton PM for the company details and I'll dig them out.
