Magura ~ Timeline and history...?

Having never tried Magura rim brakes I am now more than a bit curious about them, particularly as I have a set waiting to find the right bike.

Anyway all I know about them is a few names; HS11, HS33 and Hydrostop etc but have no idea as to which came about first, next, last and what the differences between them are.
I'm guessing the original 'Hydrostops' came out in the very early 90's followed by the HS11 then HS33, but I'd really like to have some dates and pictures too so that I can go from there.

So if anyone would like to furnish me with some much needed information then I would of course be most appreciative.

The very early hydrostops were from the 80s. One of the earlier iterations was on the Pace RC100 and it's forerunners back in 1988/89:

I have a feeling the HS11 were the original hydrostops.....i ran a pair back in 1990 and they'd possibly been out for a year or 2. I also have a pair of HS33 which are in yellow...not sure which came next...

From what i remember: The earliest ones used silver bodies and had clamps that almost looked like jubilee clips rather than the alloy clamps. They also used massively long levers. They were derived from motorbike ones and were used on trials bikes in the late eighties.

Next were the alloy body with alloy clamp as shown above. Both these were just called Hydrostops.

Then came the more iconic Hydrostops HS22:

These were used on the RC100 and Saracens.

mid nineties bought the HS33 and Johnny T variants and the budget HS11, at this point I get a bit fuzzy as it's all too new for me..

There were also HS22s in bronze colour that reappeared later as the HS11.

HS66 and 77 were for drop bars (and completely awesome on a drop bar MTB)

Thanks for the information so far chaps. Can I ask when the QR Evolution mounts became available and whether the first generation Hydrostops and HS22s had braces as standard..?

I don't remember braces for the originals, but then I don't remember them being a retrofit option that would need them. They were available for the HS22 Hydrostops, mat black with the blue decal, they used fixed adapters rather than the evo, they came with the HS33s, although can be retrofit onto HS22

Thanks Pete. That makes the set I have HS22s then. Sadly they don't still have the blue labels, but the original mounts with their limited adjustments are complete.

Are the braces in your photo the original ones or some other after-market kit?

As has been eluded to - I seem to recall the HS11 and early HS33 running concurrent for a while as bottom / top ranges.

Also, to add slightly to the mix, they have been called HS33 since early nineties through to present range. For example, I have a set from '93 ish with yellow bodies / red adjuster, and a very different set in silver and black from around '04 or so.

I'm not completely certain, but I think they stopped new model names with the HS33 and relied more on 'year' naming - even though there don't tend to be variations between the years, merely more 'special editions'.

Along with Pete though, my knowledge tends to stop at around '95...

The early Hydrostops had four fingers levers as shown on that pace and here

Shortly after the pace RC100 was released, you could buy the Hydrostops but they had changed the clamp (now attached to the body) and the lever was still four finger but less arched.

In the next release they changed to the two finger lever (as pictured by Pete) and now included braces & QR’s.
