But I'm wondering why you couldn't just use a couple of alloy strips bolted into place where the brake blocks would normally go. Then drill another hole in the plate for the brake block level with the rim.
Because you would increase the leverage at the wrong end of the brake. Large pull of lever no discernable affect at brake. Might work bit better using V-brake levers (i know its mtb derived but it'd be cool to see it tried out) Alternatively try BMX caliper brakes or old style roadster caliper brakes, some of these can have up to 100mm reach. In fact get a bolt on U-brake plate and you could try BMX U-brakes.

You could swap the front fork for a mtb one, cantilever bossed forks predate mtb so would be allowed as do canti brakes ;)

Anyway rules are meant to be broken, my shopper sports front sus at the moment though I should put its rigid forks back on

getting the gazzelle up and running for turbo trainer and ecks bargain wheels will be used- cheers mate. However I had to really pull the rear stays apart to force the rear wheel in- take it my bike is designed for a shorter spindle 120 or summit and I have 130 wheels from eck? Will I damage the bike if i run with it or is steel good that way ;)

I know you're meant to be able to stretch the rear dropouts, Sheldon as usual has some words re: this.

I tried it with my old Rockhopper, but I twice had the back wheel pop right out of the dropouts, both times while trying to trackstand on the road. Oh the embarassment.

Possibly didn't widen it enough, anyway I no longer trust the bastarding thing.

I widen steel frames dropouts all the time, never had a problem. Even begining to get the hang of realigning rear triangle of a frame. Use the Sheldon method it does work but remember you may need to realign the dropouts aswell ;)

Formulating a stupid ride plan for Summer Solstice if anyone is interested.
Thinking it might be cool to ride to the source of the South Esk river in Midlothian which starts a few miles North of GT. take bivvy tents etc and camp out through the short dark bit then when light returns head back north. Starting from my flat its all B/Unclassified road, double and single track. Should be possible to keep tarmac to a minimum and when down by the source you'll feel in the proper back of beyond.

I've long meant to do this run but never quite got around to it. Scenery should be great provide weathers good.

Cheers

Nice wee ride has piqued my interest.... a London to Edinburgh ride in 2 days with the option of a 4 dayer as well. Ratrace will be running it next year, fully supported, accom, food, etc :)

Should be a nice warm up for a full London-Edinburgh-London Audax if you've ever fancied it
