MacRetro chat and rides thread

Oldgit Simonside is the man for routes 'round that way. Coquetdale is his patch. I shall present him with a spur this eve, suggest that he gathers his steed, rouse his men forthwith, and inform him that the border clansmen are restless and seek council.

Ive just been looking at the calender and I'm only free on the last weekend of this month.

So it would have to be the 24/25th or the 1/2nd of October, as far as were we ride?? the oldgit ride would be a good idea.

You must have a good cake shop some were up there you could build a good ride around ;)

Whether I'm off to the Peaks meet next weekend or not i need to test ride my mid 80's bike so this Sunday its up the Pentlands. finally sorted the troublesome U-brake but not convinced to its long term reliability so Pentlands should show up any weaknesses.
Feel free to join me from Dreghorn, PM me if interested and we can arrange a meet time. If its peeing down though dont bother as I wont

Spoke to the oldgit at the weekend and he mentioned a good route from Alwinton that goes up onto the border ridge. There is a car park with toilets at the start and pub/ cake shop options.

Only weekend i have free is 1st/2nd October though. Anyone else free that weekend?

Could just drag you southerners up to glencoe/fort bill area instead, Mr P is trying to sort something out for late sept/early oct.

I'd love to but its the best part of a days drive to get up there for us guys. I suspect it takes just as long to get back.

I might make a weekend of it next year as its an area i really want to ride in. Then there is Skye too. Might have to make it a longer 4-5 day trip.

What's the best time of year to avoid those midges? They eat me alive.

go in april or october - there are much less then, especially April. The next fort bill run will be an overnighter in a bothy or similar, we only really do 30 -40 miles tops a day and as you know we start late :)

I'll be at the Alwinton ride if at all possible, hopefully have an upright riding positioned bike sorted by then but it may look a wee bit odd

You need a BMX 26" cruiser Velo.

I used my Humuhumu all winter last year with BMX cruiser bars to get the front end really high, which took weight off my bad wrist. Great riding position. Convert one of your existing bikes using a short stem and a 8" rise BMX handlebar.

Buy a 29er V, you know it makes sense! Singular gryphon springs to mind. Drop barred or singlespeed or tourer or road(ish) any variation. Or a Salsa Fargo.
