I favour the nuts and bolts method, thus it'll be more like tyre studs than tyre spikes. Spikes could be rather nasty in the inevitable unplanned dismount :roll:

Admittedly the tyre will be heavey but if I've loads of low gears then I can live with it. I need an ice tyre for commuting more than recreation and spikes wont last long on tarmac transitions so studs would be better plus less likely to be the cause of a self inflicted puncture. :LOL:
 
slick type tyre on the inside
cheap knobbly outside either 5.2 x 12 poprivets 8mm long ones do too
or 6mm roofing bolts and nuts

or just use raptors they work okay in the current conditions
 
As a matter of interest, are studs of any type allowed on bikes on public highways? I know they are banned for cars.
