Re. insurance, go mutual young man. I have just about everything that needs to be insured done so by NFU Mutual.

Let's face it, nobody is going to drive a harder bargain than the wily farmer.

Have tried all comparison sights and all say the same, not a disaster though, just got used to low premiums on my bikes

My cars are all single policy - but my bikes are under one multibike arrangement. Haven't yet found one which covers both , not at any reasonable charge anyway.

Now - what sort of device do I need to attach my pannier rack to this rear end? Unlike my c16r, the P7 has no rack mounts on the upper seatstay. Is it just a case of strategically placed P clips?

Probably either this or the Breezer at Ullapool :p

Those tyres and a rigid will be fine. Even if I do use a bike with RC35 forks - there isn't exactly any meaningful travel. Still might go rigid. :D

Back in the day I used to do loads of multiday touring- most weekends in fact. There were 3 or 4 of us and we all used Specialized Crossroads II. They were superb tyres. Narrow at 1.75 and with a low tread pattern. They would get sketchy on mud and wet grass but as most of the routes tended to be forest track, disused railway or country lane they were ideal.
In fact, IIRC, we did the original Coast to Coast (the Alfred Wainright version) on those tyres and that route took in every surface imaginable.
When distance is involved you need something fast rolling to conserve energy. Ultimate grip is useless as you are going to be heavily laden and only travelling at 4/10th speed anyhow.
Puncture resistance should be your main priority. Nothing worse than a few punctures to slow a group down. And remember- a heavily laden bike is more prone.

I was actually thinking of doing the same - stealing the wifes semislick tyres - anything to get my speed up towards you guys, although if you are doing it too... :)

I was also going to bring a folding spare tyre for emergencies - but if it is not likely to be that rough I might not bother.
