MacRetro chat and rides thread

I'm in procrastination central again. I have a pair of good rims DT swiss X470's and I have a front hope XC hub. I also have a pair of Real disc hubs. Now the Hopes rep is well known but a bit of digging has revealed the Reals aren't so good, in fact the rear is positively mince. Do I hang off for the Hope rear or just build them with the Reals? Hope build = more dough but a better wheelset. Or just get feckin on with it.

Gazz - that man juice is strong stuff. Killed the chat thread stone dead.

Nipped down to the basement last night to fit the new forks to the iDrivel - it seems I no longer have a functioning hack-saw, so I sanded the Rockhopper frame instead. Much more satisfying than stripping the paint :)

details? forks and paint?
Forks are brand spanky RS Rev Dual Airs - Finally giving the iDrivel the 140mm forks it deserves.

The paint? Wait and see :)

Hang on for the Hope hub. Build the wheel once and build it right. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I like to think that's the kind of advice they give out.

Sorry forgot the power of my man juice, Ill never mention it again.......ahh bugger done it again.

That sounds like a good set up ZZ albeit for a big ugly bouncing machine (velos forthright manner seems to be infectious.  )

And I agree, wait to build the best wheels, you'll be happier longer.

here are a few pictures of the prestige in it's new black shadow coat, pretty good job by the chap in Kilmarnock, not perfect but a good approximation of satin. It is surprising how much more the frame weighs compared to paint, not huge amounts but noticeable.

Finish on the frame looks alright to me - you got the decals ordered from Gil yet?

I remember getting the Hardrock frame home and looking it over pretty closely - there are bits where you can still see the original red paint which obviously wasn't completely blasted off. Interesting comment about the weight as well - At least it'll be more hardwearing than paint.

Also, sorry to go all Lawrence LLewelyn-Bowen, but I think I have a cream duvet cover and pillow slips that matches your cream sofa :?

Yeah sent off an email after I got the decal proofs, so should look alot better stickered up. I think it is pretty good, just a few imperfections but to be fair they are out of the way.

What you waiting on get some pictures of your linen up, could have duvet cover of the month comp.?

Moderator Hat On :

No duvet cover comp's allowed on this site, thats a different forum altogether.............weirdo's

Gazz, is it powdercoat?? its tougher than paint but still can be polished. My black Fat, white Yo and Green dale are all powder finishes and they are, as i'm sure you would agree top notch. Its a cheap commercial coater I use and the finish is usually very average- but with a few hours graft you can get a great result.

Get some fine paper- 1500 grit and lightly sand with plenty of soapy water and then polish with Farecla medium grade compound. Its hard work but after a bit of quality wax it will look super shiney. Remember to wax after decals are applied though or they might not stick too well.

Yeah powdercoat and top notch advice, mind you, I'm going for the satin look of the original prestige, you had one did you not? Would you still recommend buffing to shine or keep as is- I never saw a real black prestige bitd so have no frame of reference.

Ahhh i was looking forward to a soft furnishing sub section as well.

I'd apply a wax anyway Gazz, powder coat is porous and moisture can still get in to the tasty steel.

thanks kaiser, better do the yellow yo to then, did not know that.

Got the road bike tonight and it looks pretty nice needs a bit of elbow grease and the tyres look a bit dodgy (how much is a set of ok road tyres btw?) but other than that a nice retro dolan frame, it rides very well on the wee run up and down the street in the pissing rain and gale force winds.
