MacRetro chat and rides thread

Congrats Dave  , when's the stag night :D

Finished work early today so had a play about with the coaster brake, it's actualy a simple thing, pedaling back drives two wedges into a cone which forces a brass drum apart and into the outer hub shell, it's all pretty dry inside (and smells like an old workshop  ) but it's in pretty good nick.

BUT, axle is definetely too short, it's stepped too, i.e has two different size threads on the one shaft so definetely will need to get one machined up.

Also the other problem will be chain line, dont think there will be any adjustment at the hub so recon i'll need an adjustable BB

I have a two speed automatic Bendix coaster brake if you want it. It looks to be in good fettle and is 36hole. Its quite heavy though???!

Why not just go for discs? Have a look at Eric's excelsior Frankenstein on Alan Bonds website.

Two speed automatic ?, didn't even know you could get one of those :) , will keep it simple for now though and see how it goes, if it works out and you still have the two speed i'll maybe go for it

Did have a look at Alan Bonds site, sure i've seen one with discs.

Did consider discs, mocked the bike up with the disc wheels off the LTS (Hope C2's) and it looked pretty good but for some reason i have my mind set on only having one lever and one cable to the front brake hence the reason for not going for Velos rear drum or any geared hub.

Any ideas what i can do for the axle ?, i recon getting one made up is my only option, also do you think the chain line will work ?

You can calculate your chainline. Fit a chainset ideally the one your going to use and measure to the centre of the seattube . From here you can extrapolate all the info you need. It will be easier to work through it than write up a long winded explantion.

Also why does the axle have 2 sizes?

God knows why the axle has two sizes ?, you can just see it in the pic above, the thread for the left hand cone that goes into the hub shell is slightly larger than the threads for the nuts.

Just had a brain wave though, could build it up (for now) with the wheels and discs off the LTS, and the Z3 Marzocchi Bombers i got for the FSR, would be single speed though :)
