Depends..I've had a pair of Giro shoes break at the strap within months, I've had a couple of years out of others (Time, DHB, Pearl Izumi) but I've had most success with Shimano. But really depends on what you expose them too, mud and wet will kill most shoes in jig time IME. I'll pretty much pick a Shimano shoe now if it fits and does what I'm after.

Agree with K, Shimano do last for years. Have a pair of winter boots that are 12 years old, but have been relegated to road use as the gore tex leaks now. Have a pair of walking style shimano boots that are even older. Sole lifted at a couple of areas around cleat slot but stuck back with glue and are fine.
Quite impressed with my Specialized Rime. Had them four years and still going strong.
Never really had a bad pair of cycling shoes but I generally have 2-3 pairs on the go at a time depending on where I'm riding.
Being careful when drying them and not sticking them on radiators certainly helps. Also stick down any bits of lifting trim as soon as possible before the wet gets underneath.

I find keeping your cycling shoes in a nice warm bedroom wardrobe/cupboard and never using them keeps them in good nick :facepalm:

I've used mainly Specialized, Mavic and Diadora over the years, chosen for fit more than anything else. The only ones I had an issue with were a pair of Diadora MTB shoes around 95-96 where the sole came away from the upper at the heal fairly quickly. Other than that I can't remember having any wear out particularly quickly.

Shimano for me as well, both road and mtb. Though mine are fairly budget versions they do get a fair amount of use and they tend to last for years. I had a pair of Specialized touring type shoes and they have lasted years and years so would always look at them again.
