Machine Tech hub service

I use some types of bearings in bulk, and can do 6001 2rs and 6002 2rs for a measly £2.50 each if needed. . .
Metal sjielded ones are typically just dust seals, and not so good for the muddy world of bicycles. . . ;)

Whilst we're on the topic of bearings, why do bikes use ball bearing cartridges rather then cylindrical (needle?) bearings?

Its all to do with the loading required of the bearing.

Ball bearings do everything well
Taper roller cope with axial loads i.e along the shaft
Roller cope with radial loads i.e. @90deg to the shaft/up and down
Needle are similar to roller but have a smaller O.D.

Plenty other types and combos used all good a summat.

Hi,
My rear hub has some play. I am wondering if it is sufficient enough to open the hub and remove the inner shaft to replace the bearing that are pressed into the hub body, or if I will have to disassamble th complete shaft to get rid of the play? Is there an easy way to disassamble it, or is there a special tool needed?
Thanks and Regards,
Alex
