m900/910 xtr

you can mix and match even between different model groups over quite a few years, depending on which ones.

I don't have photos specifically of the spring setups in the M900/M910 rear mechs, but as you can see in the first photos of a 910 RD, it has a full coil spring from pivot to pivot providing the body tension:

The M900 has a different style spring that acts on the pivot closest to the cage, it's hidden in this photo by the upper pulley-the inner part of the body pretty much wide open, unfortunately I can't find better photos, but you get the idea:

Also, on the M900, there is an adjuster screw (hidden behind the cable clamp bolt, unfortunately) that you can use a flat screwdriver on to increase or decrease the spring tension. You can just see the spring inside the body between the pivots in this shot:

The conventional spring, called a torsion spring. Was common to all of that era.
The helical spring that replaced it was also a 'filter up' from the XT groupset a year before. (m737).
For anyone who cares, the high/low limit screw area had also altered shape.

I believe this spring modification was brought about to make sure GripShift had a hard time working correctly ;)

Might as well add this for the 1995 XTR blurb

P.S. The M900 in that picture seems to have a Titanium Pivot bolt. That's not standard for any M9x0 rear mech.

Torsion Spring-thanks, I just couldn't think of it. What was it about the different spring that made it less compatible with gripshift? You have me curious.

Interesting about the Ti pivot bolt-I hadn't noticed that, but I pulled this RD and bunch of very early M900 parts (date code Dec 91) from a S-Works M2, and I remember thinking the canti bolts looked different, they may have been Ti as well.

Look what I called the coil spring originally. Brain freeze at the time and I only got the torsion part form the docs. I couldn't remember the name of them either.

I never had the 737 or m910 at the time (my trust 900 worked fine) so never used them with gripshift. But it was added for 'LightAction' with the new improved shifters of 737/910 and everything to follow.
But people on here and vague memories prompted by that, say that they didn't go too well. I think the rear mech didn't pull hard enough on the cable on the return stroke (to lower cogs) to pull the cable properly through the shifter (it's a direct route through the RF+'s, GripShift are coiled and go through a bend so more friction). Sram BassWorms (not its only job) and 'improved rear mech springs' then became aftermarket.

Cool info-makes sense with the cable routing differences as you mentioned. Thanks.

I have both derailleurs and never even seen that :)
Thanks.

The M9X0 indeed did not have the ti bolt, that came with the M950.
Other changes were the quick release levers an extra front derailleur: M901
Mid-life updates for the cranks were as FC said: from SG chainrings to SG-x and later in 95 the Ti crankbolts and Alu chainring bolts.

Wel.. what I actually wanted to say was that Sniperworks website is being renewed and that is will be on www.sniperworks.nl
I unfortunately don't have the time for it now, because I works in Canada and US, but when I am back in Mai 2012 I will update the whole site with new pics.
And I lot of extra info I stole from Fluffy Chicken. ;)

Get that website up and running fully again, makes it much easier to just point there and pinch pictures ;)

I never thought when I started making that website, that so many people would use it.
Thanks all for using it and all comments and help.
