M700 Deer head F & R deraileurs

Just as an irate Japenese Toyota executive with poor pronounciation caused the Colt sports car to be called the " Starion " instead of stallion so legend has it a similar barely-bilingual Japanese executive caused this " Deer " equipment to be called the " Deore " groupset.

As far as I know, Deore comes from D'ore: French for Gold (hence Cote d'ore = Gold coast). Therefore later XT got the gold XT letters.

You've got it almost... real story is Mr Ikenaga who called the French distributor Mr Bertin beg 70s and asked him how to translate in French the word "Gold".

And Mr Bertin replied :

-"OR !
- Awh ?
- No, OR... or, de l'or.
- Deawh ?
- No, de l'OR
- Dehor ?
- Yess, de l'OR"

And six month later, Mr Bertin opened the box containing the first batch of DEORE components.

(believe me, this is the true story... at least the official !)
