Lower crown race

Guys,

I can't send pm right now and have had great support and help from Tim at just backdated...

Do I need to take the lower crown race off my rock shox shown the picture to go over the collar on the pace rc35 I've been trying to fit tie evening...

Advise please as I can't see how the lower crown race will come off the rock shox without damage...where can I get one of these?

Thanks

Yes, it comes off.
Normally with a hammer and screwdriver! Although there are tools available to buy for it they are expensive.
I use a hammer and a long flat piece of brass.

For a less damaging approach (without the specialist tools) a Stanley knife blade works well to get them started, then switch to a screwdriver when there's a big enough gap - work on each side a little at a time to prevent binding.

Be careful though as slipping with one of those can lead to messy paintwork (though the blood does usually wash off!) - also expect blade breakage if you twist it in there at all.

This is the method I used to get the race off my RockShox Darts.

Ok cool...starting wonder if my dream retro pace forks are worth it, just rebuilt the rock shox and they're fine now..pace do feel silky smooth though!

Also I noted there is no slot in the steerer tube to take the lock washer is this normal?

I have to admit this sounds better than my method!

Have to admit I just up end the fork, stand the steerer on a piece of wood, then tap the race off from the bottom with a hammer and screwdriver...

...then I cut a slot in the little f*cker with a fine-tooth hacksaw so I don't have that problem again!

Split crown races rule

I use a wide tipped punch and work around the crown. Gentle taps and the race tends to move without damage. If not I take it down the lbs who'll do it whilst I wait.

Yes you need to put the crown race from your Rockshox over the crown race collar on the Pace forks.

The lower crown race will come off, it may be quite stubborn though. Any of the methods above will work, or take it to a bike shop who should have the proper tools to remove it without risking any damage, and should only be a 5minute job.
Just persevere with it, it's not a difficult task, and the reward at the end of it will be a pair of Pace forks on your bike :D
