I have a crown race removal tool, but sometimes it's easier and quicker to use a nice sharp chisel and a steady hand.
I'd recommend clamping the fork into bench vice mounted steerer tube cutting guide to keep things stable and safe.
Of course all this relies on having the right tools.
On anything with cartridge bearings, I wholeheartedly agree.
