Might get a 21mm Crap Brothers headset too so that's 10mm

Crank Brothers? I have a pair of Cobalt SL (stainless) headsets on my desk. They're a beautifully made, well conceived piece of common sense engineering, but I can see how they might be fragile, especially if not installed with the greatest of care.

I have read of a couple of bottom bearings shattering under the load, but nothing recent. Most reviews containing such complaints are a good few years old now. If they're as good as their wheels, then I've nothing to worry about. If I were in a similar position, where the low stack height was essential? I wouldn't hesitate.

.... except their wheels* aren't particularly good, a case of form over function. You can buy conventional wheels that are lighter, stronger and cheaper.

* referring to cobalt wheeks.

Re:

Cobalt wheels.

Yes, you can buy better performing for less, but that would be missing the point a bit.

I've got two sets, & I love them.

My comparisons are limited to the other stuff in my cupboard, which at present is a set of Hope/Mavic wheels that were OE fitment on my Whyte, a set of Spinergy's (with the PBO fibre spokes) and a set of Mavic Crossmax ST's. All are good wheels.

The Hopes are the most conventional. 36 spokes in standard 3 cross lacing, and they are a fine set of wheels that seem to put up with my 16stones just fine. The Spinergy's are quite unremarkable in terms of ride and handling (which is a good thing!), but they do seem to spin up quite nicely. The yellow spokes are a bit wild to my eye though. The Mavic's are a bit "creaky" for my liking. They use thick gauge alloy spokes in a mix of 2 cross and radial lacing. They handle nicely, but the noise is odd.

The CB Cobalts do everything the other wheels do just as well, and to be honest, in a "Pepsi challenge" I really don't think I'd be able to tell you which wheels were on my bike by feel alone (the creaking from the Mavic's aside). The crank brothers wheels do have a couple of other little bonuses to consider though;

1/ they're an absolute doddle to clean. They really only take a few seconds to wipe down after a ride and they're sparkling again, and

2/ the real reason for having them, they look absolutely ace mounted on a bike. :cool:

Admittedly, you'd be mad to pay the RRP for a set, but for the money you can get them second hand, they're pretty good wheels...

Re:

well problem solved! :D
dropped the forks off at a local welder/fabricator to have 70mm added to the steerer.
they are done and ready for pick up tomorrow, £20
happy days as i get to raise my position a little and keep my forks and the king headset!
will post a pic once i get em back!

Re:

picked up the fork yesterday, he made a brilliant job! the extra length lets me lift the stem a little for my old man back, with scope for further height increases in the future!
