I actually really like the old-school brake levers with external cables (from the top of the hood), but they don't seem to come in a modern shape with an ergonomic placing for the hands.

Sadly, no. Merckx and de Vlaeminck and so many others didn't seem to be bothered though. ;-)

Neither am I. A compact handlebar brings the brake lever much closer to hand. I like it a lot. What brake lever are you using?

I was thinking to get the Tektro RL340. Any suggestions?

If I was looking (and in the UK) I'd jump on that

I'll have a look at what is the cable pull (I'm using Ultegra 6800 calipers)
