Lombardy Paris Nice pics, Giro Jersey Finds

Buzzsaw

Retro Guru
Just recently returned from a trip to my home town in New Zealand and was digging in my storage boxes and found a few bits of gold from the 1990's when I was trying to break into photography in London. Right place, right time and I landed a spot as a darkroom troll in a small but top rate photo agency that covered Formula One, motorcycle GP and any other motoring related stuff. Any young lads dream job! Lucky they allowed me to take off for some long weekends to to try my hand at shooting a few cycle races on the continent. I managed to blag and bluff my way usually without a press pass with the right camera gear dangling from each arm. Use to watch top english speaking shooters Graham Watson and watch ex Motorola rider Ron Kiefel's wife Darcy snapping all the action on the back of their motorcycles and think "if only." Instead it was the crazy race with other spectators to get to a good viewing spot at various points of the race course.
The film scans aren't the best as they are done on some cheapo fleabay scanner - gone are the days where I use to spend thousands on photo gear as that bought home the bacon then!
Found a 1990 Giro replica Gianna Bugno pink jersey as well lurking in the dark depths.
Puts a smile on your face looking at this stuff!

Great shots! I do still like a good B&W action photo. Somehow all the colour detracts from the personal suffering of the riders, with B&W it's all laid bare.

Personal favourite of these?

The Roche one.

Re:

Glad everyone appreciates the pics. I preferred black and white film for that very reason plus with color you had to be precise with exposures and use a lot of fill in flash to brighten the shadows in the riders face. People using digital cameras now don't know how they lucky they are!!!

Re:

Can't recall any got published in the end. I do remember with the Sean Yates descending pic I just missed the deadline for Cycling Weekly to send them a copy as I was still getting back from Italy. There's some stuff of Paris-Roubaix and Liege Classics some where and needs another trip to dig out. However I had quite a few cycling pics published in NZ newspapers including a up and coming young teenager Greg Henderson (ex-Sky team rider) who originally comes from the same home town.
