Lizard of doom...

Right. Some background: usually I only build motorbikes, moved on from bike bikes a long time ago, but like most here I have piles of bike bits lying around. I had a brain fart last night that I was going to build something, the challenge is I'm not allowed to buy anything. Unfortunately the only donor frame/bike I had was an old Raleigh Lizard that has been behind my shed getting buried in the soil, overgrown and rained on for a good 8 or 9 years.

Which has lead to this insanity...

Now, this may be a little low rent for round here, but if anyone is interested, I'll document what else I find and add. I THINK I have some bmx dia compe calipers and 2 finger levers in the roof of the garage, along with god knows what else.

Also, I'd be interested to hear opinions about finish, do I strip the rest of the original paint back as well or leave it as is?

Anyway, cheers for looking :)

Re:

OK, it's pretty much finished. Ground lugs off, built a chain out of 2 other bits of chain and the end of my oil filter wrench and treated all the rust. I had to muck about a bit to get the chain line but it's there.

The only thing I need to actually hand money over for is a bloody rear brake cable. Other than that it's a 100% recycled/scavenged parts bike. From nearly a decade rotting behind the shed to something sort of useable! :)

I like a rat type throw together parts bin build.

Just a suggestion to stop the hand in the pocket for a rear brake cable....
......either yourself or a mate with the equipment weld the freehub up and make it a fixed wheel,
thus removing the "need" for a rear brake.

Re:

Yeah I did debate that but my knees are only just up to a single. Fixie is off the menu for me I'm afraid.

There's something really pleasing about the proportions of how it sits, can't quite put my finger on it.

I've got some bearing work to do on it too yet (BB, head, rear wheel) but once that's done i'll ride it a bit to make sure I'm happy with it then I think I'll burn the rest of the paint off.

Re:

Thanks for the positive replies :)

Been googling rust framed bikes and if I get time today I'll definitely remove the rest of the paint. Got 2 bikes in for mot first though.

Oh and I had to admit defeat last night and buy a rear cable. £1.49!
