Try veloplugs, lighter than rim tape and makes tyre fitting easier.

they're a neat concept but the edges of the plugs are a bit sharp and they don't fit all rims.

Two layers of fibre packing tape... works great and is even "period correct"

I always use 2 layers of electrical tape...hang the weight

Go ghetto tubeless with some gaffer tape. Ditch the tube for some real weight saving!

2 laps of leccy tape works lovely on a mavic 217. pierce with a screwdrive at the valve hole, for perfect coverage

Wow thanks for the posts,

I have use two-three turns of elec tape before, I will continue using this. I found you can stretch it to the right width as well.
