Letting go

I'd go for the "if you regularly ride it, keep it - if not, sell it" rule of thumb.

At the minute I have two bikes that I regularly ride (in Greece, a '95 Kilauea and, on the Isle of Man, a Singular Hummingbird singlespeed).

So I have my 1988 Explosif and my blue '95 Explosif SS that I really should get rid of.
However, whether I do or not doesn't make much difference, as neither of them is worth very much, if anything (about what you'd spend on a week or two's shopping probably) plus I don't tend to spend much money on bikes, except for consumables like tyres, chains and brake pads etc.

In fact I probably spend more on riding gear (shorts, jerseys, shoes, gloves and stuff) than on the bikes themselves, so that wouldn't change even if I only had one bike, nor is storage space an issue.

So, unless someone walks in one day and makes me an offer I can't refuse, I'll just keep them (and I've had the '88 Explosif for 21 years anyway).

Generally speaking though, for me nowadays, it's more about the riding than the bike - as long as I have a bike to ride that I feel really suits the riding that I like to do (I have) and it is well maintained and mechanically as perfect as I can make it (it is) then I'd rather be out riding it than fettling it in my workshop.

It's like I enjoy wheel building, but I only build the wheels that I need, not for a bike that I never ride......

You could always just look at better ways to store your bikes so other trivial things like cars can fit in there WITH them. That way you can keep everyone almost happy.

I have a row of hooks screwed into the ceiling joists all along one wall with my hardtail, FS bike, road bike and my friends bike all off the floor and out of the way. They interlock a bit (handlebars over the next bike's top tube), but if you're careful they won't damage each other. A bit of clear tape will help prevent scratches too.

This is sound advice.

What's this thing about keeping a car in the garage though? Surely garages were invented so people had places to store loads of crap they don't need.

Ones that I love. Something about wanting to park their car in the garage. Little ones wanting room for their bikes and toys in there also.

Ok, most definately won't get rid of the Ritchey's, or the klunkers. Road bikes stay, need to keep the tandem. Modern hardtail, the full susp..... .... crap..

Go vertical. Bikes on the ceiling and your bride can park under them!

I say ditch the Champion and finish the C klunker.

Your wife fits the DX klunker, so that one doesn't count for "your" quiver.

Full suspension bikes are for a sally. Keep the modern hardtail.

Or just hide some of them in the attic :p

Good luck!

my aim is to get down to 2 bikes..........my retro yo eddy and a modern fun/hack/do it all bike for family duties and transport to the gym etc.

so far this year i have had quite a few dream bikes and sold them either within weeks or after a couple of month, in the past 6 month i have let go:

cannondale SS
dekerf uk limited
pace rc200 f3
long travel mountain cycle san andreas
short travel mountian cycle san andreas
moots rigormoootis
merlin xlm

my trek will be going to my bruv as a hack bike and the jones is probaly gone this month.

 crazy stuff, but a good sort out is whats needed. much better for me just to have 2 bikes and get used to them.

why you selling the Jones ?

not actually selling it off, just it may have a new owner on RB, got a deal planned...it cost me over £6,000 and for a second hand bike that i dont want to spoil it seems crazy to have that cash sitting there when my main rider is now a single speed trek that i have owned for 11yrs!
