Yeah, I think the ups of discs very much out weigh the downs for MTBs, but for road bikes I don't think they do.

The other issue with road is that you have to beef up the fork leg significantly to take the braking load. The result is a harsher ride than a rim brake fork.

I suspect Fox and Rockshox are working to fix that problem

I came across this article the other day, pad wear might be an issue for longer "road" rides:

I thought the USP of disc over rim brakes was that the braking surface stays clean. The other advantages of power and modulation are down to hydraulics over cables not disc over rim. Read some reviews on SRAM Red hydraulic rim brakes, they make all the same claims of improved power and modulation that the disc brake reviews state.

I thought roadies were all about the harshness of the ride.Certainly those rigid affairs must transfer every ripple on the road.

Feel the road and all that :?

Re:

I really should let other people ride my Bulls, just to figure out if it's just my bike that has shit brakes or if I'm just real picky when it comes to brake feel.

Everyone keeps saying how disk brakes are easier to modulate and so on, but I just can't seem to modulate mine at all.
Pretty sure it's not due to a lack of skill, and the current full XT set was set up properly by an LBS who actually cares about bikes and the quality of his work. So I'm pretty confident that it's not the quality of the brakes or a bad setup either.

Less than 1000 miles in 5 years with the £1.5K+ modern, while my old £200-£300 bikes do 5K+ miles per year. that's how much your fun can be ruined by bad brakes.
