it might not, sound like the freehub body might have gone. I'm sure you could get a new one on here somewhere. less hassle than a new hub.

Aaah ok, so is there anyway of knowing for sure? what's the best way to diagnose the problem? Apparently it only happens when you push down hard on the pedals, when trying to move off quickly

Free hub has gone, best buy a new one, I picked up a damaged hub with a good freehub for £5 so just swaped them over took about 10 mins. You could also pick up a new rear wheel in the for sale section.

yeah i've heard good things about the p2's but my dilemma is my f*cked up wrists,

reckon a flexstem would help? not 100% original but plenty would have had one bitd so i dont think anyone could hold it against you :)
you would probably want to strip the hubs to check out the bearings and surfaces and the freehub really needs to come off for that anyway.
having said that, are you sure its not just the chain that is slipping? bound to have a worn out cassette and stretched chain if they are original too.
gl with it

...yeah it seems to be in good nick.

I've think i've just discovered the 'slipping' problem. After a proper, close up inspection of the bike i've noticed the teeth on the crankset are seriously warn.

The teeth have become 'shark fin' shaped instead of triangular, definitely enough for the chain to slip round with force. I guess after 16 years you can expect this type of wear, check out the pics....

Looks good enough not to require respray :D

Plus if you do paint it you'll simply spend endless hours worrying about getting it chipped as has been mentioned before here. I've just covered my daughter's Caldera with helicopter tape in critical areas after respraying it over xmas. Totally paranoid about getting it scraped in the playground.

Now if you ever want to sell those p2's............. ;)

...no re-spray now after hearing everyone's comments.

I'll bear you in mind for sure if i ever decide to sell the P2's although if i do it will be as a complete bike me thinks.
