I think that is a modern trait, you also see it with MTB's.

It is probably as much to do with the sizes and fit recommended by bike shops as anything else.

office workers with a bit of thickness round the middle tend not to have the flexibility to get down onto a "road" front end

same reason you see handlebars and shifters kicked back - although this is usually because the rider has bought too small to get a short top tube without considering the stack height they might need

Mine hasn't though, still get as aero as my back will allow!
